Get Emotional About Your Child’s Development

DO NOT stop reading if you have heard this before, everything is energy. Whether you have or have not heard this before, this is a scientific fact. What really matters is understanding why this piece of information is important. As parents we often find ourselves drained of or lacking energy. While this is commonplace for all parents, the good news is we truly are never out of energy. How could we be if we are made of energy?

We have discussed that feeling good is essential for positive achievement to occur in our child’s life. There are lots of tools and programs such as, the OH-KS Power Up Your Magic, that can really make a long-lasting impact on your child. Nonetheless, understanding HOW and WHY you should put your energy towards these types of programs is essential.

Getting Emotional

Look at the word emotion. Now let’s break up the word “Emotion” into “e” and “motion”. Then let’s denote that “e” stands for energy. Therefore, we are talking about our energy in motion, when we are talking about getting emotional.

The words emotions and feelings are often used interchangeably. Regardless, both are excellent indicators for you and your child to know where your energy is flowing. For example, if you are having negative feelings or negative emotional responses, then your current thoughts or actions are not helping you feel good. Those thoughts or actions are then a hinderance to both your and your child’s overall growth. As a result, it is important to put your energy in motion towards thoughts and actions that elicit positive emotions and feelings.

There are lots of tools and techniques you can utilize to help you and your child feel good. Adopting positive attitudes, cultivating a growth mindset, and learning how to use meditation, are just some of the ways your child can learn to feel good. The key is understanding the long term benefits of channeling your and your child’s energy towards these efforts.

Building The Brain Tree

In order to really understand the benefits of putting your energy in motion, we can turn to science for the answers. Your child’s brain, while it is still developing, is like a circuit board. It can send signals to do all kinds of things. It learns to do things automatically and does so by the creation of many neurological pathways.

These neurological pathways are like roots of a tree. As your child grows, the pathways increase and become more engrained in the brain. The roots serve to provide nutrients to the tree and send energy signals to let the tree know what to do with those nutrients. Your child’s brain on the other hand, has neurological pathways that are based on information they have learned and experiences they have had in their life. Those pathways then signal their brain what to do based on the current experience or circumstance.

These neurological pathways will ultimately control your child’s behavior. Over time they become reinforced based on experiences and information. In a tree, those roots grow stronger and tighter into the earth. Like the tree, these pathways grow stronger and deeper in your child’s brain.

We know that we can uproot a tree and replant it somewhere else. You cannot change the roots of that tree, but it can grow new roots and use the original ones to get stronger and more stable in the new environment. The good news is you do not need to uproot your child’s brain. The brain is wonderful and has all the power it needs. The best part is that there is a lot of nourishment for your child’s brain to program it for success!

How Long Does It Take

By now you are probably saying, “OK, I understand that I can mold my child’s brain for success, but how long does it take?” It is important to realize that this is ultimately a way of life, not a one-time quick fix. The good news is once it becomes a habit, then you have done most of the hard work!

Research from the University College of London states that on average it takes approximately 66 days to develop new neurological pathways in adults. Since children have brains that are developing and growing, you will see the fruits of your efforts and theirs much sooner. It is up to you what skills and tools you want to engrain in your child’s brain, however, if you stick with it you will be setting them up for long term success.

Remember this process should be fun. If it doesn’t feel fun at first, just ask yourself, once I see my child thriving will I feel good? If you are feeling good then you are on the right path! Eventually you will find the fun in the effort or the fun will find you!
